The reserve offers spectacular views across rolling parks and hills. The impressive, extraordinary annual migration of wildebeests, zebras and gazelles, which starts from the Serengeti, crosses into the Mara grasslands from late June.
Tourists arriving in July-August can view this spectacular migration of the wildebeests, followed by the predators - lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena - with the vultures following in the air. Visitors can observe wildlife throughout the year. The reserve shelters elephant, black rhino, buffalo, plains zebra, hartebeest, lion, leopard and cheetah. After breakfast drive to Ngorongoro, arriving in time for a short game drive enroute to the lodge for lunch. After lunch descend to the crater for game viewing. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers a large amount of varied terrain between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara parks. It is an area of fantastic natural beauty and contains active volcanoes, mountains, archaeological sites, rolling plains, forests, lake dunes and the famous Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge. At one point in time, millions of years ago, Ngorongoro might have been about the same size as Mount Kilimanjaro.
However, the volcanic activity subsided and it collapsed inward forming the crater, which is the world's largest unbroken "caldera". The crater is 610 meters deep and covers an area of 260 square kilometers. The spectacular views inside the crater are a major tourist attraction. On the floor of the crater, an incredibly dense collection of wildlife is to be found. There are about 25,000 large mammals in the crater. Huge numbers of zebra and wildebeest are accompanied by animals like the gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest and warthog. Giraffes are not found here because the food supply is inadequate at tree level. Similarly, the topi is not found here due to the fierce competition with the wildebeest.
The crater is one of the best sites to view the black rhinos in Tanzania, small though their numbers may be. Some of the other animals found in the park are the lion (including the black-maned males), leopard, cheetah and hyena. Dinner and overnight at The Lodge
DAY 5. NGORONGORO - SERENGETI
Today after breakfast drive to Serengeti arriving in time for game drive enroute to the lodge for check-in and lunch. After lunch you will have an afternoon game drive starting from 3.30pm to 6:00pm. Widely recognized as the major wildlife reserve in the world, the Serengeti National Park is, simply a vast natural paradise. The park itself covers an area of almost 15,000 square kilometers, equal in size to Northern Ireland, while the greater Serengeti ecosystem encompasses 30,000 square kilometers, the area of Belgium, and includes, besides the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and Ikorongo Controlled Areas in Tanzania, and the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya., as there are no fences along the different park borders, animals can freely move from one park to another. Serengeti is one of the world's last great wildlife refuges; its name derives from the Maasai word Siringet, which means "endless plains". , It is one of the finest in the world.
Its extensive grassland plains spotted with acacia trees are home to the largest herds of migrating ungulates and (as an obvious consequence) the highest concentrations of large predators in the world. The National Park is broadly divided into three different areas. The Seronera Valley and Seronera River, in the centre of the park, is probably the most popular area (and most easily visited, through the Park's Southern entrance, the Naabi Hill Gate). This area is characterized by wide open grasslands and rock kopjes, with several perennial rivers (Seronera, Nyamanje, Wandamu, Ngare Nanyuki) running through it, ensuring year-round water supplies and enabling many resident animals to thrive year round.
The Western Corridor, crossed lengthwise by the Grumeti River, is a regular setting for drama, as year after year the wildebeest cross the crocodile-infested river during the Great Migration, in their attempt to reach the northern plains. Finally, the Northern Lobo is extending northwards to join the Maasai Mara, offers a change to see plentiful game during the dry season. Diner and overnight at the lodge
